Leopard Slug in Backyard

This slug was on the walkway from my house to my driveway.
It's more than just an ordinary slug.  It's a Leopard Slug.
Here you see it eating a dried out slug that died the day before.

This is the slug that died before it was dried up and eaten.

This other slug is crawling up the banister.

In this closeup I noticed that the back of the slug
has different markings than the front.

I found an interesting video about the Leopard Slug's odd mating behavior. It surprised me on how strange it actually is; like a science fiction movie.

  1. Great photos, John and interesting...I couldn't get the video to work. I enjoy watching documentary videos from BBC and David Attenbourough (not sure how to spell his name.)
    Neat Post!!!

    1. Until I moved many years ago, I thought slugs were only white.

  3. Isn't it strange how we are so interested in learning about things that we might find repulsive when we come across the real thing? The video is possibly the most sensual thing I have ever seen. A beautiful dance.

    1. Maybe the video has to be double clicked. Otherwise you might have to find it on YouTube.

  5. Your photos of the leopard slug and video are quite interesting. But slugs can decimate a garden. If you want to grow plants where they exist you might sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the plants you wish to protect. It is non-poisonous, but will eliminate slugs who can be interesting and still be a pest.

    1. My wife hates slugs. She says they are disgusting. I've seen a bag of diatomaceous earth in the garage, so maybe my she is using it for the slugs.

  7. Hello John,
Thank you so much for your visit and comment. It's very nice to meet you. I didn't know that slugs were cannibals. I really do dislike them. They keep eating my impatiens and peace lilies.
