Renewing My Mini Vegetable Garden

Each year I plant a small four foot by four foot vegetable garden.  This year I'm squeezing 4 tomato plants (hopefully 4 different varieties) and about 6 cucumber plants into this small area. I know it's less room than recommended but I always do it.
In the past the deer used it for a "salad bar". I tried a mini electrified fence which worked but the orange extension cord  looked out of place. The chance that it would be run over by a lawn mower if I did not disconnect it in time was not worth the risk.
I tried metal chicken wire strung out into a 4x4x4 cube. The cube turned into a dented box. It looked terrible.
Now I'm trying a four sided design. Two sides are fixed and two sides are removable. If needed I'll put a soft plastic net over the top at night when the plants grow high.
Here is the layout. I've weeded three out of the four quarters. The pile of weeds is to the right bottom of the photo.

While weeding the last quarter I noticed how good the weeds looked!  It was beautiful once I had a closer view. The photos are not as sharp as I'd like but I was balancing on unsteady ground.

  2. Beautiful. One person's flower is another person's weed. It depends on whether it is wanted or not.

    1. That's just the way it is I guess. If roses sprouted all over the lawn and between cracks in the sidewalk they would be classified as weeds.
If dandelions were difficult to grow, who knows?
      Have a great week Robert!

  3. Beautiful, John...such a pretty blue.

Deer can be a problem with vegetation...we always have a yard full in all seasons! But I think they are beautiful and I love having them visit :)

    1. They are a part of Nature. I think my plan will work to keep them from eating my plants. Then I can enjoy the deer even more.
      Thanks for the comment Jan.

  6. Deer love to eat tomato plants, don't ask me how I know!!
We seem to have very good luck with banana peppers. The deer leave them alone and even the squirrels don't bother them! (We have tried to grow small cherry tomatoes in a pot but the darn squirrels pulled the green tomatoes off the plant...they didn't eat them, just threw them down the driveway! We have some mean, crazy squirrels in my neighborhood.)
Oh, and that plant with the blue flowers looks like some kind of sedum to me, I like it too!

    1. My wife saw a squirrel run off with a green tomato once. Then some tomatoes had small bite marks about the size of a squirrel's mouth. I imagine the deer eat the whole tomato.
      Enjoy the week Kay!
