My First Tomato of 2013

It looks so inviting!

On the vine.

But when I turned it over it had a black spot.  Inside, most of it was also black.  I cut away the small good area to have a taste.  It was delicious!

I've read that this could be due to a calcium deficiency but the timed released vegetable fertilizer contains calcium. Maybe it's due to being pressed against the nearby vine.

Hopefully the next tomato that ripens will turn out better.

  1. Has it been very dry where you are? I have heard of "stem end rot" that happens to tomatoes when they don't get enough water. It looks just like that.

    1. It has been hot but we had a lot of rain too. I water it three times a week with one gallon per plant. Maybe it needs more water than that. I'll have to make sure it doesn't get dry.

  3. It really does look delicious from here. I'm sure in time you'll produce the perfect tomato as you get use to how much water etc they require. Later on, you can sell organic veg to the locals too, especially with such a large garden.

    1. The vegetable part of my garden is not as large as it looks in the photos. The flowers and trees make up the most part. I give the tomatoes a gallon per plant every other day or so if it doesn't rain.

    1. Thank you Jan. I've not been blogging lately because I'm trying to set up a paperback version of my novel. I can't wait until it's done. It's much more tedious than an e-book.

  5. My parents grew little tomatoes that took over like a weed. I loved the freshly-picked tomato smell, but my absolute favourite smell that of freshly plucked lemons from our tree.

    1. I wonder if I could grow a lemon tree. I can imagine how good it would smell.
