Angel of the Morning Meanings

What are your thoughts about the lyrics to this old hit?

Some interpretations from the web:

~I thinks she is basically saying I'll have you however I can but if you feel you need to leave in the morning, don't feel too guilty about it.

~I always thought it was a woman who was desperately in love with the guy, but knew he couldn't (or wouldn't) commit, so she's willing to settle for one night with him, and just wants him to call her an angel in the morning, even though he's just going to leave and not come back.

~I think that the song is about a woman who is taking the chance of 'going all the way' to 'show her love' to a man who may or may not love her. It seems to be a rather young girl perhaps her first sexual encounter, trying to be grown up and mature.

  1. I always thought the song was about a lonely woman who hooked up with a man one night. She knew what she was getting into and expected nothing more than companionship for the night. All she asked in return was for the man to at least act like he appreciated her for that night.

  2. I agree with Emma!

It was lovely to hear this song - I haven't thought about it in decades.

  3. Very often I reexamine lyrics from favorite songs in my past. Life seems to add new perspective to the meaning/message of a song.
You put in some views on your post but you didn't indicate your own view.
I think the song tells a story of a sexual encounter from the view of the woman. I don't think she is young since it says, "old enough to face the dawn". What happens during the passion of the night vs. the light of day can be very different.

    1. I think the woman started an affair without expecting anything more in return. In the morning if her lover decides to leave, she hopes the night will be a special memory for the both of them.

  4. Why does everyone assume the female singer is talking about a male lover? There's no explicitly gendered words in these lyrics. It could just as well be a song about two women lovers who are closeted and cannot be openly lesbian.

    1. That's true and when the song was written lesbian relationships were not accepted by most people. That could be why her lover felt she had to leave in the morning. Hopefully, she will return and form a bond hidden from society.

    2. I agree with Emma's interpretation. Song was written by Chip Taylor, who is a fantastic songwriter, musician and really nice guy, I've met him a couple of times. Ironically, he also wrote "Wild Thing".

    3. Those ARE two very different songs, aren't they?) I always liked Wild Thing, but really loved it after seeing Animal (the Muppet) sing it :)

  5. Oh, finally just what exactly I was looking for - the lyrics! The discussion is a bonus. I didn't know and never thought of wondering what it was possibly about. I was a kid when this hit came out and it's just something that crossed my mind nowadays. Thank you for including the lyrics on your post. I couldn't find them anywhere else. It's great to finally go over words properly, not just hum the tune.
