I remember how for Halloween some kids would fill an old sock with colored chalk pieces and break them into powder by hitting the sock on the ground.
If someone did not give out candy their sidewalk would be marked by large chalk spots. It was harmless, a good rain or hosing would clean it all up.
The older kids would sometimes hit the smaller children with a sock. I remember how afraid we were that we might be hit. It was more fright than pain.
I found this video which is close to how we used to do it except that we did not use a grater, only the sidewalk.
Here someone is trying to make money from such a simple project.
Did you make "chalk socks" for Halloween when you were young?
I never heard of chalk socks before. What a cool idea. I'll have to pass it on to my grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteMy reason why i dislike Halloween. The boys added
DeleteRocks to the crushed chalk. I grew up in the Bronx. Today is very different no one wore costumes to work
It was not very popular in the city and lots of us stayed home. Patents did not let us trick or treat
That's a great idea and completely new to me. Our grandchildren are too little to do this yet, but . . . they'll be old enough someday :) Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of a chalk sock either, a very harmless prank even for the ones being "chalked"
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was young and even older Halloween I had never heard of :)

Sock trick sounds interesting and logical from the children's point of view who want candy lol

Nobody's heard of it? Well, I have! I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and as a yearly event, the kids in the neighborhood would put on their "old clothes" and battle each other with "chalk socks". I believe it was on "Mischief Night", the night before Halloween. By the end of the night, everybody was covered in a ghostly layer of chalk dust (and bruises). Later on, the socks were replaced with switchblades, and more recently AK-47s.
ReplyDeleteWe did it in the Bronx in the 60's and 70's.
ReplyDeleteYep we sure did. I don't recall it being to.Halloween tho. Thanks for the great memories
DeleteI saw video of it from the 50’s. It did not look harmless it’s elderly men and women as ell as little kids being hit on the head and in the face. It was out of control.....
ReplyDeleteI remember chalk socks wars. I grew up in The Bronx. We would tie a string to the end of the sock full of crushed chalk and swing them around hitting each other. By the end of the day/eve, you were covered in various colors. That was fun until your parents gave you the evil eye.
